Exploring Rome

Two days of wandering!

sunny 27 °C

hi to all you avid readers of this 'ere adventure!
I've added more links than usual today to help you get a fuller picture!!
If you'd like to email Tim .. [email protected]
Rome is a huge city.. we are finding that we see a lot more by wandering, but it can be a bit trying as the humidity is pretty high at present!

Yesterday we found our way to the old roman forum, ran into a couple of Roman henchmen along the way! It seems to be a huge area with more excavations being attempted and reconstruction of ancient temple pillars in bits and pieces ..
We admired the huge monument to Victor Emmanual

We made our way to the huge Church - San Maria Maggiore..This is a link and also some pics for you to browse. really an amazing place..
Along the way we looked into other buildings etc.
In the evening we also went back to see the Spanish Steps where the concert was the previous evening.
We got into the Trinita del Monte church

Today we had a later start!!
We utilised our trusty guide map and found the huge Pantheon . This was a rather mind-blowing experience.. entry was free and there were many people.. although it's now a Catholic Church (as are all the churches!)
This is where the famous artist Raphael is buried..(pics in gallery)
But we wound our way in a different direction .. to see the Piazza Navona
Here's the wikipedia link too

From here we eventually made our way to the bank of the River Tiber Rome's main river.
We got lost on the way back .. map navigator had a bit of a senior's moment!!
One extra amusing anecdote.. on the way back we had to cross a busy intersection where no less than 3 lady police were all blowing their whistles frantically simultaneously.. like having three umpires at an AFL match.. Thery just blow the whistles and wave their arms in all diresctions.. then a motor bike policeman sped up to get through .. ever seen a copper on a motor bike just blowing his whistle gripped tightly between his teeth and gesticulating wildly (with one hand!!)
very early start tomorrow .. we have a tour arranged..!!
